Naranj Garden, Royan

A private garden on the Caspian coast in Mazandaran — an angular pool, a curving stepping-stone path and an outdoor lounge set into lush planting.

Overview

A garden for a private residence in Naranj, Royan, on the Caspian coast of Mazandaran — a green, humid region. The design covered the pool, terraces and planting, and the studio led the site from 2019 to 2022.

The challenge

The plot is irregular, and a standard rectangular pool would have left awkward leftover corners. The client wanted a garden for family life and entertaining, with water, shade and a place to gather in the evenings.

Approach

  • Shape the pool to the site. An angular pool follows the geometry of the plot, so the water fills the space rather than sitting in it.
  • A path that wanders. Round stepping stones curve through the lawn and soften the hard lines of the pool.
  • A room outside. An outdoor lounge with a fire table and a covered pavilion extends the house into the garden, framed by dense planting suited to the Mazandaran climate.

Key learnings

  • Irregular sites reward custom geometry.
  • Contrasting straight and curved lines gives a small garden both order and movement.
